My Upcoming Calligraphy Workshops in Indonesia

Hello, friends! In this post, I will be sharing about my previous and upcoming workshops in Indonesia but first, let me give a quick introduction for those of you who are new here.

I am Catherine, the founder of Everlace Design Co, a calligraphy and design studio in the San Francisco Bay Area. I started my calligraphy business in Jan 2019, doing wedding calligraphy, teaching workshops and offering on-site calligraphy for corporate events. In this first year, I had the opportunity to do live calligraphy for big companies such as Bvlgari, Twitter, Jimmy Choo, and more. If you want to know more about my background and how my calligraphy journey started, I wrote a blog post about it here.

I visited Indonesia last May and hosted a calligraphy workshop in my hometown of Lombok and in Surabaya, where I went to high school. (Sinlui peeps, where you at?)

It was such an awesome experience sharing my calligraphy knowledge with my local people. I had students ranging from 12 to 60 years old! I love knowing that calligraphy is being enjoyed by people in different stages of their lives.

One thing I noticed was that the classes were pretty quiet compared to my classes here in the States. One of the reasons why I host workshops is to create a community for people to share their artsy side, talk about creative things and meet fellow creatives, so please don't be afraid to ask questions and chat with your fellow students!

Here are some photos from the workshops:

Looks fun, doesn't it? Don't you wish you were there? Well, good news, my friend! This year I have the chance to visit and stay a little longer in Indonesia and I decided to host more workshops, this time adding Jakarta to the list because there were many requests from my Jakarta peeps! The classes will fill up quickly so register soon. Register by Feb 29 to save 10% off your ticket!

I offer three different supply kits for you to choose from. Basic, Deluxe, and Premium Kit.

The Basic Kit is included with your ticket purchase but if you want to elevate your calligraphy learning experience, you have the option to upgrade to a Deluxe or Premium Kit where you can get a practice pad, a better pen holder and ink holder, and more nib variations. I also include my traceable workbook in the Premium Kit to help you practice at home. You can choose your preferred kit when you register.

Basic Kit includes a personalized folder, alphabet and warmup guide, a Speedball oblique pen holder, a bottle of sumi ink, a silicone ink holder, 2 nibs, a few pages of practice paper. This kit is included with your ticket purchase. This photo is missing the silicone holder but you can see how it looks in one of the photos from my previous workshops above.

Deluxe Kit includes everything in the Basic Kit plus a Rhodia Dot Pad, a Deuce 2-in-1 holder instead of the Speedball holder, and a wooden ink holder with 4 vials instead of the silicone ink holder. (Add an additional IDR 205k)

A little bit about the Deuce Pen Holder: You can use it as a straight holder which will work best when you want to write straight letters. You can also use it as an oblique holder which will help create slanted letters. It has a more comfortable grip than the Speedball one that came in the Basic Kit. If you are left-handed, I'd highly consider getting it as some left-handed people find a straight holder works better for doing calligraphy.

Premium Kit includes everything in the Basic kit plus a Rhodia Dot Pad, a Moblique 2-in-1 oblique pen holder instead of the Speedball holder, a wooden ink holder with 4 vials instead of the silicone ink holder, ink sampler (walnut, gold, silver), 5 nibs, and an Everlace Design Co traceable workbook. (Add an additional IDR 455k)

A little bit about the Moblique Pen Holder: Similar to the Deuce, you can use this straight or oblique. The body can be twisted open for nib storage and it has a smaller neck than the Deuce, which people with small hands might find more comfortable. See the photo below for color options. When ordering, please let me know which color you would like.

I curated this nib sampler for beginners who like options. (Like me!) These are the nibs that I would recommend to anyone who is just starting calligraphy as they provide enough variations to explore and play with.

After I took my first calligraphy workshop, I still felt a bit lost in the beginning trying to recreate the letters on my own and I remember wishing I had a traceable workbook. That is why I created this workbook to help you practice at home. I recommend using tracing paper to trace on top of the pages instead of tracing directly on it so you can reuse the workbook.

If you want to know more about my thoughts on other calligraphy supplies, check out my blog post here.

That is all the info I have for now. If you make it down this far, that means you are seriously considering taking my workshop and I hope this post will help you decide which supply kit is good for you and I hope I get to see you in my class!
